ACP protection film: peel strength and outdoor life

ACP protection film must survive routing, folding, transport and months of outdoor exposure on a facade before removal. The governing specification is peel adhesion after UV ageing, not initial peel — an unstabilised film embrittles in sunlight and tears into strips instead of peeling.

The failure everyone recognises

A facade is complete, the scaffolding is still up, and the film will not come off. Instead of peeling in sheets it tears into narrow strips, and where it does come away it leaves adhesive bonded into the coating.

That is UV embrittlement. Unstabilised polyethylene loses elongation under sunlight, so it fractures across its width rather than stretching as it peels. At the same time, heat and UV drive the adhesive into the coating, raising peel force at exactly the moment you need it lowest.

The remedy is at specification, not at removal. Once it has happened, the options are slow manual removal and solvent cleaning at height, on a finished facade.

Site practice that prevents the problem

  • Record the application date on the panel schedule, so exposure time is tracked rather than guessed.
  • Remove film progressively as each elevation completes, not in one operation at handover.
  • Never use indoor fabrication film on panels that will be stored or installed outdoors.
  • Store film-covered panels shaded and ventilated on site, not stacked in direct sun.
  • Test removal on one panel before stripping an elevation, so a problem is found at one panel rather than fifty.

Frequently asked questions

How long can protection film stay on an ACP panel outdoors?

It depends on the film's stated outdoor service life and on actual exposure — direct sun in the Gulf or coastal India ages film considerably faster than temperate overcast conditions. Treat the rating as a ceiling and remove as early as the programme allows.

Why does the film tear into strips instead of peeling?

UV embrittlement. The film has lost the elongation it needs to stretch as it peels, so it fractures instead. This is the characteristic failure of unstabilised polyethylene, or of stabilised film left on beyond its service life.

Can I use the same film for indoor fabrication and outdoor facade work?

Only if it is UV-stabilised and rated for outdoor service. Indoor fabrication films are not, and using them on facade panels is one of the most common causes of removal problems.

Does black and white film perform better than clear on ACP?

For outdoor work, yes. The white outer surface reflects heat and reduces the panel and adhesive temperature in direct sun, which slows adhesive ageing. It also makes protected panels identifiable across a site.
