Laminated glass standards explained: IS 2553, EN 14449, ANSI Z97.1
Laminated safety glass is certified as a finished laminate, not as interlayer film. IS 2553 Part 1 governs in India, EN ISO 12543 and EN 14449 in Europe, ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 16 CFR 1201 in North America, and AS/NZS 2208 in Australia and New Zealand.

What the tests actually measure
Across regions the core test is broadly the same: a defined mass is dropped from a defined height onto a mounted panel, and the panel must either resist penetration or break in a way that leaves fragments retained by the interlayer.
What differs is the impact energy classes, the mounting conditions, the tolerance for detached fragment mass, and the additional durability tests — high temperature, humidity and radiation exposure — that check the laminate does not degrade in service.
Because those durability tests exist, interlayer quality and lamination process control both show up in certification results. A laminate that passes impact but fails humidity exposure usually points to interlayer moisture control rather than to the impact design.
What to ask an interlayer supplier for
- Material specification with the properties that govern lamination — thickness tolerance, adhesion grade, moisture content, haze.
- Batch test data for the consignment being supplied, not a generic datasheet.
- Evidence of suitability for the standard you certify to, and any third-party test reports available.
- Storage and handling requirements in writing, since these directly affect whether your laminate passes.
- Batch traceability, so a failed test can be traced back to material rather than guessed at.
